Detox: Day 2.

Today I woke up with a splitting headache like I had a hangover.  It went away after I drank my morning shake.  Then I hopped on the scale to find out that I already lost a pound!  Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not one of those psycho people who weigh myself daily.  In fact, until recently, I hadn’t stepped on the scale in months.
On tonight’s menu?  Broccoli and Arugula Soup from GOOP.  I made it the last time that I did the cleanse and it’s delish.  Thanks Gwyneth!

What to Wear.

As many working mothers do, I struggle with the age old question of what to wear to work each day.  I am so physically and emotionally exhausted after negotiating with my girls on their outfits for school most days that I just grab whatever is clean and if it matches– it’s a plus.  The 15 lbs. that I have gained in the past six months don’t make it especially easy (or inspiring) to walk into my closet excited about what to outfit myself with.

This is why I was so excited to see this Vogue online feature called Five Days, Five Looks.  This week’s installment features Vogue’s Senior Accessories Editor, Filipa Fino.  I just love the looks that she pulled together.  Classic, timeless with just the right pop of color.

An inspiration for all of us on what to wear in the New Year!

Detox: Day 1 Menu.

Last night I was cooking up a storm in our kitchen making sure to have all organic food on hand for Mike and I as we enter day one of the detox. This is so important because the first day is the hardest, and you will want to make sure that there is no room for temptation.  Here is what I made last night:
Chicken with mushrooms, shallots and fresh tomatoes,  I only used lemons and and salt and pepper to for flavoring.  The mushrooms and shallots give the sauce the illusion of heartiness… like it was marinated in wine.
Three large chicken breasts are enough for both of us for three days.
Green beans with olive oil, garlic and salt and pepper.
Organic salad greens.
This morning I popped my first of three doses of 10 pills.
..and gagged through my morning shake.
I ate pomegranate seeds when I got to work.  I also packed a bag of organic baby carrots and two apples for snacking.  So far so good…. Now it’s time for lunch.  We are lucky that we have a kitchen in our office stocked with dinner plates and flatware.  It makes me feel so much better about what I am eating.

Now back to work!

Today is the Day.

This morning starts The Detox.  For those of you who are joining me on this journey expect today to absolutely suck.  As you may know from the literature that I have sent you there are a few rules.. and here they are:

-ONLY organic food.
-No dairy.
-No preservatives.
-No alcohol.
Do not use bottled marinades or dressings. You can use oil and vinegar on your salads. (Grapeseed or Oive Oil are reccommended.) Lemons, Limes, Garlic, Onions and Ginger, and fresh herbs are great for spicing up your meat.
-Salt (just a little) and pepper are allowed.
-In week 1, you can only eat 4 oz. of lean protein (chicken or fish) per day.
-In week 2 you can add 1 serving of beef twice a week.
-Raw vegetables are better than cooked.

Cook enough food and vegetables to help you last 3-4 days so that you are not tempted.  The first day was the worst for me, but everyone is different.  You will start to see and feel results by day 4.  Headaches, dizziness and irritability in the first week are to be expected.  Stick with the plan and if it occurs past the first week, let Dr. Su know.  This is a common symptom for some due to reducing the number of simple carbs and the mere detoxifying effects of the first week in general.  Your body is used to eating simple carbs that your brain typically runs off of.  Give your brain some time to adjust and “re-train” itself to use fat instead.  Most importantly, hang in there.  Do not worry about symptoms such as these, they are caused by the toxins in your body that are being released.   Revel in it.
