Trend Watch: Tie Dye.

Not just for hippies anymore! Tie dye started to make yet another comeback in Spring of 2008, and I must admit, I cringed a bit at the thought. Well, last summer I found an adorable racer back tie die tank at the Gap for $4.99 (as seen above on Tori Spelling) and I thought not a major commitment -so I bought it. I love that tank, and just last week I found this little number at Forever 21 for $28.

I have totally come full circle on the whole tie dye thing, and I truly beleive that if done right, it can be stunning. Now, don’t get me wrong, there is a fine line.. So be careful and remember to keep it simple. Check out these tastefully decorated ladies…

Newest Addition….

We have a new member of the Nilsen family… Although he’s my big brother, I cannot believe that Darren has a baby. This is now the 5th granddaughter on my side. We have 7 granddaughters, 1 grandson on Mike’s side.

My Worst Nightmare.

Ever seen one of these? If you have than you know exactly what I am talking about. That’s right. E decided to take a few friends home from school this weekend and needless to say, we do not approve. We have been treating, washing and disinfecting for four days straight. Our washer and dryer have been literally running for 80 hours non-stop. We spent over $200 at CVS on various lice products, and had to go back two more times for more. After the entire family was treated on Saturday morning, we have literally washed every sheet, towel and article of clothing as soon as they have used it. I have changed all of our beds a total of 6 times in the past three days. That’s 18 changes (6 changes x 3 beds) in case you cared. What a nightmare.

Bunk Rooms.

I have been seeing bunk rooms pop up more and more lately. A great solution when you have a lot of kiddos, and not a lot of space. As you can see there are a lot of great storage ideas here. I especially love the beds that are built into the wall. This also works well at vacation homes. I may have to get Mr. Salmon cracking on having more babies, just so that I can have a bunk room of my very own!

My Design Muse.

It all started on April 9, 2001. I brought home a 2 1/2 lb. sweet little puppy… Well, that puppy (that was supposed to be 35 lbs.) has now turned into a 65 lb. hair ball-producing beast we call Bailey. Don’t get me wrong- we love her to pieces, but I have never met a dog that produces so much hair. Which is why she quickly became my design muse.

For those of you that have been to our home, you know there is a lot of black in the design elements- furniture, kitchen cabinets, the back of our front door, our banister, and I am also saving every penny to put up forty sheets of this wallpaper on a feature wall in my family room. Lastly, my next project is to paint our dining room black… Stay tuned for that one. Here are some pictures from my inspiration files to tide you over for now…..

Freshen Up Your Bookcase.

I am so happy that two of my favorite things have come together as of late: color + organization. Speaking as a woman who has her closet color coordinated, I too have organized my cookbooks in a rainbow-like pattern. It just brings so much life to my bookshelf, and becomes a design element in itself. Ahhhhhh… it’s like a little rainbow in my very own kitchen.
